摘要:As modern technologies are dominated by interface-derived materials, such as semiconductor heterojunctions, oxide heterostructures are an emerging frontier in hunting for the next generation of functional materials. Complex oxides are a class of quantum materials where the electrons strongly interact with each others and self-organize into a diverse variety of intriguing competing phases, such as superconductivity, magnetism, and multiferroics. Interfacing oxides with distinct ground states provides a fascinating platform at nanoscale for controlling, designing and artificially creating innovative correlated systems that are unobtainable by conventional solid state chemistry. The interplay among the entangled charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom at interfaces also affords a unique approach for comprehending the underlying correlated physics. In this talk I will discuss utilization of epitaxial interfaces for driving metal-insulator transition, orbital polarization, spin dynamics, magnetic anisotropy and topological semimetallicity. I will summarize our investigations on several model systems involving 3d and 5d correlated electrons.  Experimental results from atomic layering growth of heterostructures to advanced synchrotron-based characterizations will be discussed to illustrate findings that facilitate quantum materials by design.

 

报告人简介: Jian Liu博士,美国田纳西大学助理教授。2012-2015年在美国加州大学伯克利分校和洛伦兹-伯克利国家实验室从事博士后研究。 他于南京大学获得学士学位(2004),美国休斯敦大学获得硕士学位(2006),美国阿肯萨斯大学获得博士学位(2012)。 获得过美国物理学会Iris Ovshinsky奖。主要研究方向是凝聚态物理实验,包括关联电子体系、金属-绝缘体相变、超导体、巨磁阻、轨道序、多铁电、自旋电子物理等。
